Jardín de las delicias (Garden of Delight)

This was a joint exhibition in the Balmaceda Arte Joven Gallery, with the participation of Leonardo Casas, Daniela Santa Cruz and Isabel Guerrero. The exhibit ran from August 5 until September 2. Following is the official text that accompanied this exhibit and which was used by the media:

The artists who participate in this exhibit are connected with a special atmosphere, proposed from the stand point of curatorship, where perversions of affection arise.

Leonardo Casas takes on this topic in his paintings and portraits, where both victims and murderers appear on a parallel plane. His work topically revolves around “large affections” that have given origin to histories and situations, and have left enduring marks on western society.

Meanwhile, Daniela Santa Cruz evokes the age of psychedelics in her paintings. Though this may not be her intention, her wonderland scenery and close ups of flowers remind us of the images and colors used by hippies in the 60´s and 70´s, alluded to in her showing in its most pathological sense.

On the other hand, Isabel Guerrero transforms the typical narcissist image of a mirror into a suggesting self-erotic scene in her video installation. The artist´s tongue runs across the frame of the image in a movement and length that disturbs “normality.”

The same atmosphere is taken to an extreme in the portraits by Pablo Lincura, who aims to invade the spectator with disturbing images of cross gendered subjects. He subverts the traditional aspect of painting to provoke an insistent look in his subjects, which also generates their sexual ambiguity.
